is Emotional Distress an issue?
Experiencing distress means feeling overwhelmed by intense emotional or mental strain. People who experience distress often feel they lack control over their lives.
It doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t know how to handle every situation or that events won’t be challenging. But experiencing distress means they may feel they lack the resources to cope with, and manage, difficulties as well as seize opportunities.
The ambition is to be able to cope with stress so that we can relieve us of our distress but it is vital to start where we are if we are in a state of distress so that we can plan a course of counselling to be able to overcome distress and be able to recover a sense of being able to cope with the stresses and strains of life.
Dealing with Distress
The problem of distress
When we experience a sense of distress, our whole beings are affected, and we feel physical and emotional symptoms and a loss of wellbeing and even a state of being unwell. Distress itself is not a diagnosed illness but it can lead to many experiences of illness and unwellness.
Distress vs stress
Distress and stress are interconnected. Chronic stress can lead to distress, where overwhelming pressure becomes emotionally and mentally unmanageable, affecting overall well-being and daily functioning.
The effect on our bodies
As with many other psychological or emotional difficulties and struggles, distress can lead to us being unable to concentrate and, although exhausting, can lead to being constantly agitated and unable to relax or sleep.
Unhealthy Cycles
So our whole beings are in a state that is unhealthy and taxing and this further impacts our ability to make decisions or assert our needs and can be a cycle that leaves us uncertain and stuck.
How Wellbeing Counselling Works
Counselling and talking therapy is offered in a confidential and compassionate space. We will walk beside you as you explore how your experience with distress affects you and impacts your daily life.
With your therapist, you can spend time understanding the thoughts, beliefs, and values that contribute to your feelings of distress. Once addressed, you can start to work on the aspects that you feel are contributing to your distress.
We will work with you to set realistic goals that you want to achieve for your well-being, and over the course of a few weeks, you will see things change.
This process helps you regain a sense of control, enabling you to manage your distress and better cope with the inevitable ups and downs of life.
